New Year, New Decade of Living Greener

by Kate on January 1, 2010

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! Did you watch the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop at midnight? The Times Square New Year’s Eve ball is actually greener this year than in years past. Approximately 20% more efficient than the 2008 ball and 78% more efficient than the 2007 ball.

It seems like those stats mean that the 2009 Times Square Ball New Year’s Eve ball must be smaller than in years past when in reality it is larger and more decorative than it has ever been. The Times Square New Year’s Eve ball weighs 11,875 pounds. Additionally it is covered in 2,668 Waterford Crystals which can produce sixteen million colors and billions of patterns. I didn’t even know there were that many colors. Can you imagine what a box of crayons would look like with that many colors? Anyway, it is overall a beautiful effect. Now how is this Times Square New Year’s ball greener than last year?

Simple, LED lights. The 2009 Times Square ball that dropped at midnight has over 32,256 LED light bulbs. This traditional New Year display has been going on since 1907 and what a great way to start out a new year and a new decade than by making the traditional New Year’s Eve Time Square ball drop greener than in years past. We should all start the new year and new decade by finding ways to make our lives more eco friendly.
