I have a new member of my family – a handsome 6 month old chocolate lab so I thought it was a good time to talk about going green with your pet. There are a lot of wasteful products out there and scary chemicals in things that can make your pet sick over time. Here are some green tips for dog and cat owners.
- Buy natural and organic pet food – Scarily enough some pet foods actually have euthanized animal meat in them…So you really need to look at the ingredients in your pet food. Often this is called “‘meat meal” so look out for that with your animal’s food.
- Buy Biodegradable Poop Cleanup Products- Buy biodegradable poop bags for dog poop cleanup and throw it in your compost bin for excellent fertilizer later on! For cat’s, choose biodegradable kitty litter like ones made from pine. They smell better, they are chemical free, and they are biodegradable. Or skip the kitty litter completely and toilet train your cat.
- Use non-toxic cleaners – Ever see you dog or car lick water from the toilet? Can you imagine what kinds of toxic chemicals are in the typical toilet cleaner? Not good. Buy eco-friendly cleaners or make your own out of baking soda and vinegar.
- Give your pet sustainable toys or make your own – Dogs and cats are all over their toys and with that much interaction you want to make sure to buy eco-friendly toys. There are organic and fair trade toys available to purchase at your local pet store. Or you can make your own! Grow cat nip and let your cat play in it. Or tie a string to a button and swing it in front of your cat. This also works well with a string and feather. There are a lot of ways to make your own dog toys as well – check out this website for some ideas.

As much as we care about our own cats, we also want to be informed about what exactly we are feeding to not only help our cats but also the ones who do not have someone to care about them. Thanks for the info!
I enjoyed reading your post. Thanks for sharing these green tips. What should you look for when reading the ingredients in your pet’s food?
