Since there are a lot of ways to make camping more sustainable, this is our second set of green tips for camping. What is one thing I love about camping? Sitting by the fire and eating. However your methods of cooking are limited out in the wilderness. Here are some green tips for eating and cooking while camping.
- Purchase organic and fair trade food items - When deciding which food to bring with you on your camping trip, look for organic and fair trade items to support fair working conditions and to keep pesticides out of your meals.
- Use reusable dishes and silverware – You want to have the least amount of waste possible if you want your camping experience to be sustainable. Reusable dishes and silverware are the way to go.
- Use local firewood and keep it in a ring -Try not to bring your own firewood because it could have harmful chemicals or bugs in it that are not native to the area and this could cause harm to the campsite. Most places have plenty of fallen wood that will be great for a campfire.
- Use a fire for most of your cooking – The fire is the most ecological way to do your cooking while camping – so avoid cooking stoves as much as you can and use the fire instead when it makes sense.

There are some great green camping products out there nowadays.
Most people know of solar powered lights, but you would be pleasantly surprised the number things there are now. Refridgerators, Chillers, Chargers etc.
If you are taking a chiller with you, please make sure you take your trash home.
I just wrote a very similar article just in time for the season
I would also suggest camping on durable surfaces and place tents on a non-vegetated area. I know a grassy ground is more comfortable, but it disturbs the soil and plants.
The reusable dishes are a good idea as long as they are combined with biodegradable cleaning solutions. Detergents, soap and toothpaste is harmful to the environment.

Radically reducing the use of chemicals in personal care and cleaning.
Thank you for the camping tips. I never thought about the potential bugs that would move from one area to the other.
