Green Tips For Setting Up The Campsite

by Kate on August 12, 2009

Camping can be a really fun summer activity. At the same time it can be wasteful and you potentially can harm the environment around the campsite. Not good. We have a lot of green camping tips so we are going to make this a 3-week series of green camping tips. Here are some green camping tips for setting up the campsite.

  • Purchase used camping supplies – If you don’t already own all of your camping supplies, look for them used online or at your local thrift store. You will save money and reusing is more sustainable than buying new. Just make sure to look for holes in tents and sleeping bags before buying.
  • Pick a previously established campsite – This way you disturb less wildlife. You want to avoid setting up camp on plants because you want the camp area to look the same as it did before you came to keep your camping experience more environmentally friendly.
  • Use a flashlight with rechargeable batteries – Flashlights are a crucial source of light around the campsite after dark. Keep your flashlight green by using rechargeable batteries and a solar flashlight powered by the sun. To keep the light burning longer, look for LED flashlights.
  • Don’t leave the trail – When hiking, try to stay on the trails. If you walk outside of the trail, it will make the trail wider which leaves more of an impact on wildlife and the environment.
  • Keep Bugs Away In An Environmentally Friendly Way – If bugs are a bother when camping, use environmentally friendly bug spray and citronella candles.
