I always get excited when I hear about a new electric car. I see it as a continuance of the environmental movement when another big box company has decided to make a difference with a greener product…I don’t mind it at all that it is another way for them to make a profit, I desperately hope that all of their profits in the future come from environmentally friendly vehicles – if they run on trash, water, solar energy, or electricity. So I am excited to say there is another new electric vehicle coming out – the Nissan Leaf.
The Nissan Leaf is a five passenger compact hatchback vehicle that runs on lithion-ion batteries. The highest speed it can reach is 90 miles per hour and the farthest it can go on one charge is 100 miles…definitely not made for road trips…If you have a high capacity charger, it takes less than half an hour to reach 80% charged, but a regular 200 volt home charger will take eight hours to charge the vehicle completely.
Additionally the Nissan Leaf has a neat feature called the Advanced intelligent transportation (IT) system that basically allows you to reset charging using a cell phone and even turn on the air conditioning. Nissan uses the IT system to monitor its first electric vehicle model to see how it is working.
“Nissan LEAF is a tremendous accomplishment – one in which all Nissan employees can take great pride,” said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “We have been working tirelessly to make this day a reality – the unveiling of a real-world car that has zero – not simply reduced – emissions. It’s the first step in what is sure to be an exciting journey – for people all over the world, for Nissan and for the industry.”
The Nissan Leaf is supposed to come out in 2010, but we don’t know yet for how much. Hopefully the infrastructure will be built so that when the Leaf and other electric vehicles like the Volt come out, people can buy them and actually drive them around as their daily vehicle.
