Picture yourself walking around the city with your eco friendly water bottle and you realize, oh no, you are out of water! What now? First you look for water fountains…no such luck…but you do see a convenient store with plastic water bottles available and a fast food restaurant with wasteful paper products that could satisfy your thirst. Now you have a dilemma – you want to live a sustainable lifestyle, but you are also thirsty, what now? If you live in New York City, Tapit has the answer.
In New York City, Tapit is an organization that has partner cafes and restaurants that allow you to come in and fill your water bottle for free! The Tapit.com website and the Tapit Iphone application say what type of water each place has – if it is filtered or unfiltered, cold or room temperature, etc. – and where you can find a Tapit partner cafe or restaurant. The places may also have the Tapit logo sticker in the window of the place to show that it is a Tapit partner.
How did Tapit get started? According to the founder of Tapit, Kylie Harper,“I was so frustrated that in order to get a drink of water when I was out in the city, I had to purchase a bottle of it. I was eager to find a way to both save on the expense and reduce the waste that comes from single serve plastic bottles. I am thrilled that so many local eateries have volunteered to partner with TapIt and provide clean drinking water to the public.”
Right now there are over 200 partner restaurants and cafes in New York City, but Tapit hopes to eventually go nationwide, and I hope they do!
