We are doing a Fighting Bugs Series and this week is about fighting slugs. We want to help you keep those slugs away from your garden and from eating all of your plants! What a nuisance! My garden has not yet been attacked by slugs… knock on wood…but it is pretty small. When it does happen, I will be ready. Not with toxic pesticides but with these green tips for fighting slugs!
- Buy beer – When you drink enough beer, you stop caring about the slugs that are eating your garden…alright that is not the reason for the beer. If you put bowls of old beer in areas the slugs love in your garden, the slugs (who happen to love your garden and your beer) will climb into the beer for a drink and never make it out… drowning in the beer. That old beer with the dead slugs will find a great resting place in your compost bin…FYI.
- Spray Neem Oil on Your Plants - Neem oil is derived from the Neem Tree and when slugs eat it, they are basically infertile. So less slug breeding in your garden. Mix two tablespoons of Neem oil, 1 liter of hot water, and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, and spray onto the plants the slugs enjoy. Adios Slugs!
- Put fireplace ashes and cracked eggshells around your garden – Fire ashes and eggshells, when spread around the plants loved by the slugs, make a barrier. Basically the slugs can’t really get past them comfortably, so they can’t get to your plants.
- Put out birdhouses and frog homes - Frogs and birds are natural predators to slugs, so if you make a home for them, you will hopefully begin to see your slugs dissapear!
