The second set of tips in our fighting bugs series is green tips for fighting flies. I recently had some fruit flies in my home after buying some over-ripe peaches. Thank goodness I cut open the peach before taking a bite, because I found little fruit flies crawling around inside, blah! Too bad those fruit flies multiplied incredibly fast which led me to be stuck with a fruit fly problem. Such a pain! I did get rid of them though WITHOUT toxic bug spray. Here are some green tips to fight flies.
- Trap them - Make a sticky and fly enticing mixture by boiling water, sugar, and corn syrup together, then spread it on some used scrap paper. The flies won’t be able to resist and will be stuck to the paper.
- Clean your home and spray environmentally friendly bug spray - This is the ultimate way I got rid of the fruit flies. I did a deep cleaning of the kitchen, put all the fruit in the refrigerator, and sprayed Ecosmart bug spray all over the kitchen. The kind I have is for ants and roaches, but it was very effective with the flies. The few still flying around later on were moving so slow it was easy to swat them. No more fruit flies!
- Make your own fruit fly killer – Put some apple cider vinegar in a container like a glass or jar, then put a paper funnel in the container. The flies will fly in, then struggle to get out. Or put some cheap sweet wine in a cup with some dish soap. The flies will chow down and die from the soap!
- Install screens on doors and windows – This one is pretty obvious. If you own your home, installing screens on your doors and windows will greatly decrease the amount of flies (and other insects) that come in your home. Not a bad investment.
