Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Ecofriendly Duplex Homes

by Kate on July 10, 2009

The Make It Right Foundation was started by Brad Pitt to help rebuild New Orleans, specifically the Lower 9th Ward. The foundation has a Make It Right neighborhood that will have fourteen different types of affordable duplexes that families can buy. At the same time, the Make It Right Foundation asks people from all over the world to sponsor these homes and portions of the homes to make them more affordable for many homeless New Orleans families.

The Make It Right Duplex designs are solar powered and energy efficient and even have landscaping to help shade along with give sun exposure in order to help with heating and cooling costs. Additionally the homes are mostly stacked together to decrease the carbon footprint and cost of the homes for the community.

Each duplex has an innovative design that is flexible, allowing families to change the size as the family and their economic condition changes. The duplexes are also designed to have a higher elevation in order to be safer from potential flooding. In the past, the front porches in the Lower 9th Ward were a place where the community spent time together. The goal of the architects is to keep that community in the new homes with the added stoops and stairway landing areas.

The archictecture of these New Orleans future homes are incredibly unique and ecofriendly – what a great way to help rebuild the city.
