Whether you are working on your bikini bod this summer, getting in shape, or even staying in shape, a good workout is great for your body. However sometimes getting that workout in means not being sustainable. Some examples are driving to the gym for a workout and drinking water out of a disposable water bottle…causing an increase in carbon emissions from driving and waste going to a landfill from the water bottle. Not only is it not green, those types of practices cause you to spend money! Here are some tips for a greener and less expensive work out.

  • Run/Walk outside – Why run or walk on a treadmill, that uses electricity when you can walk or run outside? When you walk/run outside, you can explore your neighborhood and leave right from home so you don’t even have to go anywhere! Use MapMyRun.com to map out new paths to take to make your walk/run more exciting.
  • Join a Gym Within Walking Or Biking Distance – It is not sustainable to drive to a gym and if the gym is too far away to walk or bike, you probably won’t go a lot anyway. Why? Well, if you have a limited amount of time to workout every day and you spend  a lot of it in the car driving…it is not a sustainable use of time or the earth’s resources. If you can walk or bike to your gym, you are already getting a workout in on your way, so you effectively use your time in a more sustainable way.
  • Bring a Reusable Water Bottle – Disposable water bottles cost more money in the long run than reusing a bottle and most disposable water bottles end up in landfills. Not good.
  • Wear sustainable workout clothes – If you are out to buy some environmentally friendly workout clothing, look for more sustainable alternatives, like organic cotton and clothing made from bamboo. Or go to a thrift store and buy used clothing to wear.
  • Buy used workout gear – Want a bike? How about some weights? You can find a lot of these types of products used for low prices on websites like Craigslist.com and even sometimes at thrift stores. What a great way to reuse and recycle!
  • Give away or recycle old workout gear - Looking to get rid of your old bike or some other type of workout gear? Sell it on Craigslist and make some money! Plus it gives someone else the chance to use it or fix it up rather than it ending up in a landfill. Or give it to a thrift store; more than likely someone will find a use for it.
