When you are running around all day and meal time comes around, it can be really hard to go home and take the time to make a meal. Stopping at a fast food restaurant seems a lot more appealing in those situations. There are many negatives of fast food on the environment, like the wasteful packaging and the mystery meat dishes that even if you know what kind of meat it is, you have no idea where the meat came from… So, how about a fast food restaurant that fights against the odds and offers a more sustainable line of business? If you live in Oregon or Washington, you might have that option with Burgerville.
Burgerville is a fast food restaurant that is focused on being more sustainable. All of the ingredients in the food come from locally sourced farms and suppliers. So, unlike most other fast food restaurants, the menu is seasonal depending on what is available in the local crops. Right now the specials are Golden Fried Asparagus Spears and the Grilled Asparagus and Tomato Melt. They also serve the typical fast food fare like the Cheeseburger. What is different about Burgerville burgers is that all the red meat is vegetarian fed, antibiotic free, and local beef. Even the breakfast items have eggs from cage free farms.
The Burgerville restaurants even composts and recycles restaurant-generated waste and even the cooking oil, trans fat free canola oil, is recycled into biodiesel fuel. How cool is that? We are excited and impressed by everything this fast food restaurant does to be sustainable. Hopefully other fast food restaurants will follow the Burgerville motto: “Fresh. Local. Sustainable.”
