On Thursday, June 11, 2009, American Airlines is testing new technologies to help make transatlantic flights have less of an impact on the environment by conducting a flight from the Paris Charles De Gaulle to the Miami International Airport.
The Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE) is a joint initiative that includes the European Commision, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and several airlines and the goal is to practice new technologies on flights that reduce carbon emissions and conserve fuel.
According to Bob Reding, the Executive Vice President of Operations for American Airlines, “It is critical that the aviation industry work with our Air Traffic Control partners to demonstrate the benefits of NextGen technology today. By implementing this technology as quickly as possible, we can make real and meaningful strides to reduce our impact on the environment, increase system capacity, and reduce air traffic delays.”
There are several new technologies that American Airlines will test with this flight and these technologies will continue to be tested in Miami for two months. The goal of these new technologies is to reduce carbon emissions along with noise pollution and to conserve fuel. Some of these technologies include single-engine taxi on departure and arrival, continuous climb out and descent, optimized routing over water, and a “tailored arrival.” Southwest Airlines actually had a similar type of test flight to test greener technologies but it was a domestic flight.
Some of these technologies have already been implemented through Fuel Smart, an American Airlines employee initiative to conserve fuel, and American Airlines expects to save 120 million gallons of jet fuel and reduce its carbon emissions by 2.5 billion pounds in 2009. Wow!
