Steel Containers are used everyday to transport goods on large freight ships. Due to the trade ship deficit, there are thousands of steel shipping containers not being used. Ever wonder what happens with wasted shipping containers? Providence, Rhode Island has found a an excellent use for these steel containers – an office building.
This office building, coined the “Box Office”, will be made of 32 steel containers and is being designed by Truth Box. The building will be three stories tall and have twelve units of office and studio spaces. Already 37% of the spaces are pre-leased. The building is supposed to be completed by March 2010.
“Containers offer a timely opportunity to promote green building principals and offer high quality design in an economy that demands affordable options. I have been inspired by the innovation of other container projects such as ‘Container City’ in London, ‘Keetowen Tempo Housing’ in Amsterdam and ‘Puma City’ (which recently had a ’stop over’ at the Fan Pier in Boston). I am excited to be breaking ground today on the region’s first steel container building here in Providence,” says Peter Gill Case of Truth Box Inc.
Truth Box Inc is an architectural firm that has a main focus of sustainable building practices by striving for no waste, less energy used, and more renewable energy production. Distill Studio is also helping with the design of the Box Office and they a sustainable architectural and engineering firm. Stack Design Build focuses on green building and is in charge of the construction of the Box Office. All three of these companies have come together to build a unique building made of recycled materials. We hope that many architecture and contruction businesses follow the example of Truth Box, Stack Design Build, and Distill Studio.
