Memorial Day is a wonderful day to honor those who died for our country. It is often spent throwing bar-b-q’s and spending time with family and friends that you care for. Too bad there is not a lot of caring for the environment on Memorial Day… which leads to toxic smoke from charcoal grills, landfill waste from all the disposable products, and more but this does not need to happen on the day we honor our lost troops. Here are some tips to green your Memorial Day Holiday.
- Compost corn husks and other leftover vegetable peels – Avoid increasing landfill waste and compost corn husks, vegetable peels, and even leftover meat and bones you would normally trash.
- Don’t use disposable dishes – Yeah… washing dishes can be a pain… but if everyone used reusable dishes rather than disposable… think about the decrease in landfill waste! If you must use disposable, look for compostable disposable dishes and silverware. There are more and more companies selling them and think about how much better it is to compost them than to trash styrofoam or plastic ones.
- Don’t use paper – Use reusable napkins and tablecloth for your Bar-B-Q. Less waste and next time you won’t need to buy new ones, so you save money! When it’s over, recycle cans and bottles – More than like there will be a form of beverage in cans and bottles at your Memorial Day party – so remember to keep out a recycling bin for your friends and guests to throw those cans and bottles in so that they don’t end up stacking up at a landfills.
- Use solar lights and soy candles for outdoor lighting – If you want to light up the party after dark, buy solar lights that soak up energy from the sun during the day so that they don’t use any power when they are on at night. If you want some candle light, use soy wax or beeswax candles instead of the typical candle or tiki torches to decrease toxic pollution added to the air when the candles are lit.
- Buy organic, fair trade, and local food and drinks – Stay away from toxic pesticides and provide fair wages to farmers by buying organic, fair trade, and local food and drinks for this Memorial Day. Organic wine and beer are quickly becoming more common in grocery stores. If you want green cocktails, I highly recommend Veev liquor, a spirit made from the acai berry and distilled at a wind-powered plant. I like it with ice and a little club soda personally, it is quite refreshing, but there are a lot more recipes out there.
