Drink Bottled Water!

by Kate on May 12, 2009

Drink Bottled Water! Woah…haven’t heard that in a while. Most water bottles are not green, especially disposable ones… but we along with many restaurants, including Krispy Kreme and Snappy Salads, say, “drink bottled water!” Now, we are saying this more for the effect, (we don’t necessarily think water bottles are better than glasses) but there is a new type of disposable water bottle out there that we actually like! Why? It is compostable.

PRIMO water bottles are made from a plant based resin material called Ingeo, (aka PLA), and it is compostable in around 60 days and it is also recyclable unlike the typical PET disposable water bottles that are definitely not compostable and they can be difficult to recycle. Even during production, PRIMO water bottles are more environmentally friendly than PET bottles. PRIMO Water bottles use 79% less greenhouse gases and 49% less energy during production than PET bottles.

Restaurants doing the right thing by carrying PRIMO water bottles are even receiving increases in water bottle sales. ”We switched to PRIMO because of their plant based bottle and our sales are up 67% from the national water brand we use to sell,” said Chris Dahlander founder of Snappy Salads in Dallas. Not bad.

We still encourage using reusable water bottles because they still have less impact on the environment, but PRIMO water bottles are definitely the best disposable option and we hope other water bottle companies follow by example.

so other than Krispy Kreme and Snappy Salads where can we find PRIMO water bottles? Are they being sold in local grocery stores?

Hi Devon,
You can search their website using your zipcode for the local grocery stores that sell the PRIMO water bottles. Winn Dixie and KMart are the stores selling them near me.

Biodegradable bottles may be better for the environment, but it is important to focus on what makes bottled water unique from other bottled drinks aside from waste. By marketing bottled water of any kind, public confidence in the municipal/public water supply is entirely undermined. The less demand for public water there is, the less likely our public water systems will be funded and maintained. The money we spend on bottled water could provide essentially free, safe drinking water for the entire planet. Even though these bottles may be better for the environment than PET, they should be used for other bottled drinks that do not come out of our tap!
