It is very easy to be wasteful when you travel. Disposable shampoo bottles, fast food wrapped in nonrecyclable packaging, daily washed linens, and plastic water bottles are all part of people’s vacation habits and these are very wasteful. And there are many more out there. There is good news, however. You can travel without harming the environment! Here are some green tips for travelling and decreasing waste.

  • Reuse miniature toiletry items – Hotel toiletry items can be very wasteful because the hotels will continue to purchase and replace them. Housekeeping throws them away sometimes after only one use! This is really wasteful and really adds up in the the landfills each year. It is a lot greener to bring your own toiletries. This is especially the case if you reuse your toiletry containers over and over by refilling them from a bulk sized container. Bulk size means less packaging and less money per ounce of shampoo. Use and reuse to save money and be less wasteful.
  • Pack a water bottle – Rather than buying disposable water, soda, and coffee containers while travelling, bring an ecofriendly liquid container. A lot of the time you can get free water from water fountains or purchase larger soda bottles for the same price as the small ones and fill up several times for less money and less waste. The reusable aluminum containers are great for coffee and other hot liquids as well. Plus, some coffee shops offer discounted prices on their coffee if you bring your own cup. Reuse and save money…not bad.
  • Stay at a green hotel – A growing number of hotels are going green. There are even more that are taking steps to saving money by practicing greener habits. Many hotels are asking their guests to opt out of washing their linens and towels every day of their visit. This is a great program to participate in because it decreases water and energy usage…because you definitely don’t need your linens and towels cleaned daily…

Pack your own reusable bottle – but if you’re thinking about using it for something hot – don’t use aluminum! You’ll burn your fingers! Think about a double walled stainless bottle. That way, you can use it for hot or cold drinks!
