When you enjoy a glass of wine (or 2…or 4…) do you think about where it came from? I think of walking through long rows of grape vines and the sun beating down on my face in California, Italy, Chile, etc. Too bad that is not the case with most vineyards.
Most vineyards are not organic, which means the beautiful grape vines are sprayed with pesticides. Which means it is unsafe to walk through the vineyards at certain times because the pesticides can be toxic…scary. What if those pesticides are still on the grapes when the wine is made. Are we drinking toxic wine? Yikes. Now, how about all of the water used to water the vineyards… especially in California where there are water shortages…Wine starts to not look so appealing anymore. But, there are wine companies out there that see these problems and decided to make the changes. Shafer Vineyards is one of them.
Shafer Vineyards is a 100% solar powered company, the vineyards are 100% free of chemical pesticides (they opt for bugs, birds, and animals to take care of their weeds, vermin, and plant eating bugs instead), and even the water is 100% recycled to irrigate their vineyards. Wow. But this is not a recent change. Shafer Vineyards originally went organic over 20 years ago. The family realized the pesticides on the vineyards could be harmful for their family and pets who would run around. Other vineyards could really learn a lot from Shafer Vineyards. They even have an awesome video detailing everything about their sustainability commitment.
