What’s Greener Than A Farmer’s Market?

by Kate on April 6, 2009

Haleiwa, a community in Oahu, had a green farmer’s market (and it will continue to have one every Sunday). The goal of Haleiwa’s Green Farmers Market was to be the first sustainable and zero-waste market Since no waste basically meant no plastic, any disposable items were made of 100% compostable materials. They also asked for everyone to bring their own shopping bags or to purchase some at the event so that no bags were wasted.

The planners of this inaugural event hoped to inspire sustainable farmers market vendors in the community and it worked. There were over 40 vendors including a solar smoothie maker! There were also several local farmers who brought their crops to sell. One farmer, who brought Asparagus, actually sold out of his products. The event was very successful with over 2,000 people in attendance.

This is such a neat idea. A lot of areas have farmers markets and we love them because we can buy local produce and interact with the community. It would be so much better if all of our farmers’ markets were  no-waste.
