I am fasting from sweets for Lent this year (although I must admit I have cheated a few times) and every time I fast from anything I can’t stop thinking about what I am fasting from… Which has led me to talk about a delicious fair trade chocolate company: Divine Chocolate.
Divine Chocolate is a fair trade chocolate company that was originally started by cocoa farmers in Ghana. These farmers joined together to form a group called Kuapa Kokoo, a farmers’ co-op, that was started so that they could manage the selling process of the trade of their cocoa (Rather than allowing government cocoa agents). Kuapa Kokoo started with this mission: to empower farmers in their efforts to gain a dignified livelihood, to increase women’s participation in all of Kuapa’s activities, and to develop environmentally friendly cultivation of cocoa.” Kuapa Kokoo followed their mission which gave greater benefits to cocoa farmers and therefore Kuapa Kokoo continued to grow.
In order to continue to grow the benefits of its’ farmers, Kuapa Kokoo decided to form a chocolate company with the help of investments from The Body Shop and Twin Trading along with support from Comic Relief and Christian Aid. This was the birth of Divine Chocolate which has already grown into a leading Fair Trade chocolate company in the UK and Divine Chocolate was first introduced to the United States in 2006. Now you can buy Divine Chocolate online through retailers listed on the Divine Chocolate website or you can find it in your local Whole Foods and Borders Book Store.
I personally LOVE the white chocolate bar with strawberries and the mint dark chocolate bar… yum! And if I were not fasting, I would probably go buy some… We love buying from fair trade companies because we know the farmers are actually benefitting from the products.
