It feels great to stand under a hot shower especially when it is cold outside… but have you ever thought about what this is doing to the environment and to your water bill? Definitely not good. Here are some helpful green tips for your shower.
- Stay away from vinyl and plastic shower curtains Purchase an organic cotton, regular cotton, or bamboo shower curtain and avoid the vinyl alternatives. The vinyl shower curtains are made with polyvinyl chloride plastic that gives off gases that can cause hormonal problems with humans. Yikes!
- Insulate your pipes Presplit pipe foam is sold at most hardware stores and you can use it to insulate your water pipes to avoid pipe freezing in the winter and pipe sweating in the summer. The sweating can cause a growth in mold and you do not want that. The best part of making sure your pipes are well insulated is the decrease in energy needed to heat and cool your water which also saves you money.
- Install a low-flow showerhead This will decrease the amount of water used when you shower which will save you money and make your showers more environmentally friendly!
- Take Short or Military Showers The average amount of time people spend in the shower is ten minutes which uses around 25 gallons of water. If you reduce that to half you only use around 12.5 gallons of water. If you want to be more efficient, try a military shower – you turn off the water when you soap up and turn the water back on to rinse off.
