Water Bottles and other types of disposable containers holding liquids that we sip on each day are wasteful and often not recycled which leads to growing landfills. David de Rothschild decided he could do a lot more with these plastic bottles than trash them. He decided to build a sailboat out of them.
The entire 60 foot catamaran is being constructed out of plastic bottles besides the two metal masts which will equal around 12,000 to 16,000 water bottles. All the cloth and panels are made from recycled PET which is a plastic woven material that is made from plastic bottles.
Not only is David de Rothschild building a sailboat, he plans to sail it more than a small distance…more like a really long distance – from San Francisco to Sydney! He plans to stop in Hawaii, Tuvalu, and Fiji but the final destination is Sydney.
After the journey, the entire boat will be recycled. David de Rothschild’ goal of the sail boat and the journey is to spread awareness of how wasteful these materials are and also that we should use our waste for new things rather than create more waste. In David de Rothschild’s words:”That’s what this is all about — showcasing cradle-to-cradle products rather than cradle-to-grave.”

How awesome is this??? Mr. David de Rothschild has done something amazing here. What a good idea is “cradle to the cradle”. I`ve never heard that before and I am into sailing so it fascinates me and even inspires me. We have huge waste problems on Phuket and a great local sailor community. I wonder if we could do something great over here as well… Let me think about this
