Green Building for Affordable Housing

by Kate on February 17, 2009

Green building is often associated with luxury due to the higher costs of building with the latest green technologies – but that is not always true anymore.

In the South Bronx of New York City,  the non-profit Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDCo), recently finished building Intervale Green , the largest affordable housing EnergyStar rated building in the nation. Intervale Green was built with better window insulation, energy efficient fluorescent lights, and energy efficient appliances. Another perk and ecofriendly addition is the garden roof on the building that you can see from the street.

According to WHEDCo, although the organization chose to build green in order to decrease its impact on the environment- Intervale Green was a green development also because of the expected 30% savings in utilities for the tenants which will be very helpful especially since they are all formerly homeless and low income families.

This is not the only case of green building for affordable housing. Carrfour Supportive Housing, in Miami, is also in the process of building a green affordable housing building and in Chicago, the Resurrection Homes project, by Victoria Centre, is going to be affordable green apartments for seniors. Additionally another non-profit, Enterprise Communities Partners, plans to build around 320 affordable housing projects throughout the country.

Housing that saves people money and that is more sustainable to the environment is an excellent addition to our goal of increasing sustainability of the environment.
