We are always looking for ways to decrease the amount of waste from disposable products that we use. A huge source of waste is disposable lunch box products, especially the lunchbox napkin. These have been part of the lunch box tradition for as long as children have gotten their lunches all over their faces…so a long time. But children are not the only ones that need a napkin while eating their lunches, adults do as well. Normally we turn to the paper towels or napkins and this equals a lot of waste each year. According to Happikins, families spend more than $200 on disposable napkins each year for their children’s lunches. And that is just for lunches…
Now there are Happikins and Fabkins – two different companies with similar products and the same goal - to decrease the wastefulness of the children’s lunch box napkins. Happikins and Fabkins have cool designs for their reusable 100% cotton napkins. Fabkins has a large assortment of designs with everything from pink ballerina to X-Streme sports designs. Size-wise, the napkins are considered large enough to be a placemat, but small enough to be a napkin.
Happikins has fewer design options than Fabkins (Happikins has 15 different options while Fabkins has 60 different choices to choose from) but one great feature of the Happikins is they come with a dry
erase marker, and Mothers, Fathers, etc. can write notes on these reusable napkins for children to find when they open their lunch boxes. Children love those little notes from their parents in their lunch boxes, and so it is easy to see why Happikins added this feature to their products. The prices are a little different as well, with Fabkins starting at around $22.95 for five reusable napkins, while Happikins are around $29.95 for five of their reusable napkins.
Happikins and Fabkins also have bulk order options and programs for schools who are trying to create Waste-Free Cafeterias. Can you imagine the decrease in the carbon footprint if even just one school went Waste-Free in their cafeteria? Wow. Know of one? Please let us know!
What about adults? Well, there are other options for reusable napkins out there too besides the super cute children’s brands. Take Reusablebags.com for example, which has basic colored reusable napkins that are cheaper and more fitting for adult lunches. They have lavender, blue, and primary color options available and they are $19.95 for a pack of five.
These are great options for adults, teenagers, and children. Of course, the greenest option for reusable napkins is would be to make your own out of scrap material…but these options are a fun and an environmentally friendly alternative!
