Wacky Aptera 2e to Ship in October

by Sunshine on February 2, 2009

There’s another buzzworthy electric car on the horizon and this one is a real show stopper. Aptera just completed its pre-production vehicle and plans on mass producing the wacky tear-dropped shaped three-wheeler in October (for Californians only, look for nationwide release in 2010). Thus far, the startup has 4000 deposits of $500, indicating plenty of interest. One of their investors includes Google, who pumped in $24 million to see the Aptera come to fruition.

Besides it’s unique looks, the Aptera 2e pricing will fall somewhere between $25,000 to $40,000, much more palatable to regular consumers than the six-figure Tesla roadster.

Other features include:

  • All electric motor with a range of 110 miles per charge.
  • Charges overnight from a standard 110v outlet.
  • 0 t0 60 in 10 seconds. Top speed of 90 mph.
  • Recycled materials used in interior.
  • Two cupholders.
  • Two seater with front and side airbags.
  • Can hold 15 bags of groceries / two surfboards.
  • Above industry standard safety.
  • Cameras and monitors instead of mirrors. No more turning your head! See video…
  • Touchscreen information center.
  • Gull wing doors.
  • Three wheeled design reduces friction.
  • Head turning looks.

Aptera founder Steve Fambro has lofty ambitions: “With the 2e set to hit the streets later this year, and with additional models already on our drawing board, Aptera will create some 1,500 jobs and more than 100,000 vehicles in the next five years. We hope to change everyday driving forever by offering incomparable mileage and innovative technology at prices people can afford.”

Here’s a good introductory piece from CNN (length 1:47):

No word on whether the 2e will be offered in any color but white.
