Green Miss America

by Kate on January 5, 2009

There have been several notable steps in the cultural Miss America pageant since the first in 1921 and a some of those are:

  • Miss America 1926 made $100,000 in appearance fees, higher than Babe Ruth and the President’s incomes that year.
  • A college scholarship was given to Miss America in 1944 rather than movie contracts and fur coats given to previous winners.
  • “There She is, Miss America” was introduced to the pageant in 1955.
  • Vanessa Williams was crowned the first black Miss America in 1983.
  • The first winner to devote her year to a social issue chose to dedicate it to care for the terminally ill in 1988.
  • In 1994 the first handicapped woman (Miss Alabama was deaf) won the Miss America pageant.
  • The first Asian American Miss America was crowned in 2000.

This year, there may be a new notable step in the Miss America pageant if Ashlee Ruth Wheeler, representing Vermont, wins the competition. She is the first contestant to wear an environmentally friendly gown (made from hemp, organic cotton, silk, and recycled beads and lace) to represent her passion for the green movement.

Maybe this will push the trend of environmentally friendly clothing.

Good luck Miss Vermont!

Miss Vermont is not the only Miss America contestant wearing green. Look for Morgan Peck, Miss South Dakota in Green attire; oher evening gown, on stage interview dress, and two other suit like dresses are created from recycled media (cassette) tape woven into a attractive textile combined with sustanable fabrics such bamboo and raw silk. Her on-satge interview dress is designed totally from reclaimed pieces of previous state winner’s gowns. These are Green Couture pieces that have extended lives.
