While watching sports on TV Saturday, I ran across the above Chevrolet commercial. It made me sit up and take notice. The spot features all of Chevy’s upcoming fuel efficient vehicles, including the new Equinox Fuel Cell. These are already on the road, with 100 Equinox Feul Cell cars having been released in Q3 of 2007. The vehicles were loaned out for free in a market test program in three major cities: New York, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. The Equinox is powered by a 97 horsepower engine generating 236 lb-ft of torque and holds up to nine pounds of hydrogen in three storage tanks, good for up to a 200 mile range. Exhaust from these vehicles is, of course, water vapor.GM is hoping to commercialize these vehicles by 2010, indicating that the “American Revolution” really might be around the corner. Which is good for me, because that will be right around the time to trade in my gas sucking 2002 Blazer that gets a shameful 15 mpg in the city.
The other Fuel Cell vehicle on the road is the Honda FCX Clarity. The Clarity sports Prius-like looks and gets up to 270 miles on a tank of hydrogen. The best part here is Honda will have these ready for leasing in 2008 at around $600 per month.
